My name is Gabrielle and I am currently a freshman at Franklin Pierce College. I am majoring in English, and I planning to take part in the Elementary Education program. I plan on using this site to demonstrate what the individual and community class did for me, as well as to show what I plan to do in my Franklin Pierce career.

In the individual and community class, my classmates and I participated in the readings and discussions of many literary work. These works included Rubyfruit Jungle, Rocket boys, and Dreams of my Father. The projects that we had to do were designed to help us better understand what we want to do with our lives and how the things that we do affect others.

One of the big topics of discussion was civic engagement, which would later come to be useful with our community service projects.

"Civic Engagement means an institutional commitment to public purposes and responsibilities intended to strengthen a democratic way of life in the rapidly changing Information Age of the 21st century."

The class also had some other objectives which included:

become familiar with the Franklin Pierce College Individual and Community Integrated Curriculum;

develop critical thinking skills;

accept the academic challenge of college level writing and oral communication;

learn collaborative skills;

become actively involved in the community;

explore issues in modern America which challenge us to integrate our rights as individuals with community responsibilities; and

understand the evolution of concepts such as free choice, beliefs, values, independence, and autonomy in the context of their relationships to community standards.

understand and use the deliberative dialogue model for discussions

This site was created to educate others about the core curriculum class, Individual and community. It also serves as an idea about the empty bowls project.

On November 29th of 2006, we hosted the first annual Empty Bowls Project here at Franklin Pierce. We had no idea what to expect, but we managed to raise $1,300!!
